Lomvi og polarlomvi bruker stadig lengre tid i kolonien før eggleggingen starter

Tiden sjøfuglene bruker i kolonien før eggene legges kan ha betydning for fuglenes hekkesuksess. Ved hjelp av lysloggere har forskere funnet ut at lomvi og polarlomvi ankommer koloniene tidligere om våren enn tidligere.

Det er antatt at fugler har tilpasset hekkesesongen slik at de kan utnytte gunstige forhold, for eksempel god næringstilgang. Akselererende klimaendringer gjør at mange organismer framskynder blant annet reproduksjon og trekk, men sjøfugler ser ikke ut til å ha endret tidspunktet for når eggleggingen finner sted på tross av endrede klimatiske forhold. Dersom perioden med optimal næringstilgang fra de lavere nivåene i næringskjeden ikke sammenfaller med ungeperioden kan resultatet bli lavere hekkesuksess i sjøfuglkoloniene. Riktignok foreligger det få studier av sjøfuglenes hekkefenologi som også inkluderer tiden fra fuglene ankommer koloniene om våren til eggleggingen starter. Da skal de forsvare reirplassen, øke kondisjonen og gjennomføre parring, og denne tiden er en viktig komponent for sjøfuglenes hekkesuksess. Dette var utgangspunktet for et studium gjennomført med sporingsdata fra lysloggere hos lomvi og polarlomvi i perioden 2008-2018 fra 14 ulike kolonier mellom 62°N-79°N. Forskerne ønsket å undersøke om sjøfuglene ankom koloniene etter vinterkvartalet tidligere enn før, samt å studere om fuglene i de nordlige koloniene, hvor eggleggingen starter senere enn i sør, kom tilsvarende senere til koloniene.

Tidligere ankomst

Studien viser at ankomstdato om våren varierte en hel del (opp til 80 dager) både mellom kolonier og mellom de to artene, og mye av denne variasjonen kan forklares av kolonistørrelse. Likevel gikk det klart fram av analysene at begge artene har framskyndet ankomsten til kolonien med gjennomsnittlig 1,4 dager pr år, og dette gjelder for alle koloniene. Konklusjonen er at tiden mellom ankomst og egglegging har økt for både lomvi og polarlomvi i perioden 2009-2018. Tidspunktet for egglegging forble imidlertid uendret gjennom samme periode, og det ble ikke funnet noen konsekvenser av en tidligere ankomst på hekkesuksessen. Dermed er det vist at ikke nødvendigvis alle faktorer som utgjør sjøfuglenes hekkefenologi er upåvirket av endringer i klimatiske forhold.
